Security Risks in Hiring or Contracting Remotely

Security breach is a real risk in hiring remote freelancers or contractors. If the contractor is offshore, with access to your financial data, the risk is greater.

That is why we at Accounting Department Online would prefer to work with offshore clients via Upwork, a freelancing platform. Through Upwork, you can hire identity verified freelancers.

Another benefit of hiring through Upwork is the simplicity in payment. You are billed weekly thru your credit card, and you can also dispute the billing for a few days, both for the hourly and the fixed contract projects. If you feel that the monitor tracking reveals your project was being done properly, you can dispute the hours. If the submitted work is not up to your communicated requirement, you can ask for a redo, withholding payment.

Through Upwork, you can classify payments as either contractor cost, or professional fees. For US clients, paying for remote contractors offshore does not require you to track payments for Form 1099 filing.

Some of our clients started on Upwork. It is better for us to work on Upwork as payment are available on time, weekly. When we bill clients directly, sometimes there are delays. But because Upwork has additional fees now for clients, it is hard to bring clients over.

Upwork now has a feature for freelancers and agency to invite clients to the platform. The fees are smaller for the contractor and clients.

Other options are Dee (for billing and payment, and Hubstaff (for billing with proof of work time tracking, and payment processing).
